Christopher Mercier

*****

Mercier's work has a calculated messiness that combines geometric shapes of slabs of paint that are akin to materials used in construction. The settings for these assemblages of thick elements in combinations of primary colors and earth tones are shelter like lean-to's. What replaces the canvas becomes a holding space where the forms are more appendage than out growth. Space is conscientiously made a part of the pieces in these mini abstract architectures. The real stand out here is Mercier's use of his materials, using paint for sculpture, bending it against gravity's wishes and blending lava flows with cones and tubes.

Mercier's work was part of a group show at Merry Karnowsky Gallery.
