Makiko Kudo

*****

These paintings are big and messy; this is not coloring within the lines. The images are child like scrawl, cute and scary, like being a young 'un lost in a big forest. The atmosphere of the green shrubbery and ever present woods spirits reminds me of the work of Hayao Miyazaki, anime master of lush fables "Spirited Away" and Princess Mononoke." Childhood isolation are big themes yet in combination with communion in nature, there is a sense of protection for the innocent and lost. Deliciously large you can't help but feel the magic these little princesses evoke in their worlds.

This show runs through February 5 at Marc Foxx.
